Writing for Privacy — Asking the user for their Zip code and First name.
In today’s time where Privacy related issues are literally exploding everywhere, this particular Challenge is very important.
Even though we knowingly or unknowingly share a lot of our personal data and our lives with various sites and apps, it is the explicit asking for a location which makes people wary of how their data will be used.
And yet at times — food delivery, getting a cab… getting location is mandatory for serving the users better.
Let’s breakdown the brief —
Scenario
The user is trying to view a website to help them buy a car. But, the content can’t load without getting the User’s location. They need to enter their ZIP code and first name.
It’s a fairly straightforward scenario where the location is required to show localized content. Usually or at-least in India, each State have different car pricing for the exact same car.
But here they are asking for ZIP code, probably to show nearest Car dealers?
I didn’t understand why First name is required as User can anyway enter any random name. Same goes even for ZIP code.
This info can easily be given randomly without revealing the user’s actual location.
Challenge
Ask them where they live and who they are without sounding like a creep.
The brief of the Challenge is a bit creepy itself the way its worded. Why does any website who sells car need to know where the user is living and who they are?
